Daddy Was an Old Time Preacher Man
Parton's tribute to her grandfather, a Pentecostal minister, written with her aunt Dorothy Jo Hope and a number seven country hit for the duo in 1970.
Dolly Parton & Porter Wagoner, from Once More (1970)
Parton wrote the song with her aunt Dorothy Jo Hope. It was recorded on April 21, 1970 at RCA Studio B in Nashville, produced by Bob Ferguson, 2:57, and is the first track on Once More. It is about her maternal grandfather, a Pentecostal minister, Reverend Jake Owens in Wikipedia and Reverend Jack Owens in American Songwriter; Wikipedia's Dolly Parton article names him Jake Robert Owens, pastor of a Church of God, where she first performed at age six.
It was the album's only single, released on June 29, 1970, and reached number seven on Billboard's country songs chart and number 12 on RPM's Canadian country chart. It was nominated at the 13th Grammy Awards for best country performance by a duo or group, and won a country award at the 1971 BMI Awards and a Songwriter Achievement Award from the Nashville Songwriters Association International. A lyrics-site listing, not verified elsewhere, credits Skeeter Davis with a version on Skeeter Sings Dolly (1972), and the song appears on Duets (RCA, 2008) and Parton's The Tour Collection (2008). No video, setlist counts or samples were found.
