Blue Smoke, named for the mist over the Great Smoky Mountains, came out in Australia and New Zealand on 31 January 2014 and in North America on 13 May, through her Dolly Records label and Sony Masterworks. It includes a duet with Kenny Rogers on You Can't Make Old Friends, a new recording of From Here to the Moon and Back with Willie Nelson, covers of Bob Dylan's Don't Think Twice, It's All Right and Bon Jovi's Lay Your Hands on Me, and a new version of Early Morning Breeze, first recorded for Coat of Many Colors. Home, which she wrote with Kent Wells, was the second single.
In the United States it entered at number six, her first top 10 solo album. In the UK it reached number two and went platinum. She toured behind it on the Blue Smoke World Tour. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic wrote that "the remarkable thing is how satisfying an album this is."
