Waillee, Waillee

The title track: her full-band arrangement of the Scottish folk song "Waly Waly".
Dorothy Carter, from Waillee Waillee (1978)

"Waillee, Waillee" opens side two of the album, 5:21, and was recorded by John Nagy. It is a version of the traditional Scottish song "Waly Waly", which the Quietus sets beside Burl Ives's 1952 recording and Marianne Faithfull's of 1965; the writer is traditional and the arrangement Carter's. It is the album's full-band recording: sources describe flute, steel cello, bass and drums (Dancing Vinyl), a descant recorder (The Sound Projector) and Rick Nelson on bass with a recorder introduction (the Quietus), and retail copy says Rutman plays on it. A love song, it has been called her most outwardly accessible. Dancing Vinyl says she played stripped-down versions of it throughout her career.

No words from Carter about the song, and no covers, samples or chart history, were found. Our upload carries only the song's title, so it could be the title track or the whole album, and if it comes from the reissue it is the 2023 remaster.
