"Caught by the River" was the final song recorded for the album. It took shape in a rehearsal room in Stockport called The Green Room. Jez Williams recalled that he, Goodwin and Andy Williams just started to play three chords, Goodwin sang a top-line melody, and Andy wrote poignant lyrics about a friend of theirs. He called it the last piece of the jigsaw. Steve Osborne co-produced it with the band.
It was the third single, released in October 2002, and it reached number 29 in limited quantities. It closes the album at 5:55. Pitchfork's Joe Tangari wrote that it closes on a high note, riding on an acoustic guitar frame and ending on a glowing bed of reverb and clean guitar. In 2010 Ian Cohen described its grand, sweeping gestures as the most fitting majestic closer for the band's career, until the best-of added another song after it.
