Jez Williams said "Words" came the night after the backing track for "There Goes the Fear", literally coming out of the speakers in his home studio. He sings lead, with Goodwin on backing vocals. Martin Rebelski plays keyboards and glockenspiel, Brian Madden adds megaphone and Rosie Lowdell plays violin. Pitchfork's Joe Tangari described it as a steadily chugging confection of astral guitar, vocal harmonies and glockenspiel.
The song has a second life at football. The band support Manchester City, and a remix called "Live for City" plays at the start of City home games at the City of Manchester Stadium. The intro was also used for ITV Sport's FA Cup coverage and in NFL Network commercials during the 2006 to 2007 season. Doves also made a tune called "Live 4 City" based on the tune of the song. In 2010 Pitchfork's Ian Cohen called the song's U2-like touches mawkish.
