"The Cedar Room" first appeared on the Cedar EP in November 1998, the first release on the band's own Casino Records, a 10 inch limited to 1,000 copies with "Rise" and the instrumental "Zither". A reissue became the first Heavenly single in March 2000 and reached number 33 in the UK. The album version runs 7:38. NME later placed it 38th among the best tracks of the 2000s.
Andy Williams said he wrote the verse lyrics and Goodwin wrote the chorus lyrics. He said the cedar room was a room in a haunted house from when they were kids. It and "Break Me Gently" were the first songs Goodwin sang properly, which meant the band no longer needed to look for a lead singer. Looking back in 2010, all three agreed to the Observer that it was the song where they found their sound, pairing melancholy lyrics with uplifting music. Footage of Andy and Jez on a beach in the video was shot at Harlech in North Wales around New Year's Eve 1996.
