Her debut had sold well enough to make her Philips' top-selling female artist, and the label gave this follow-up a gatefold sleeve and extensive liner notes. It was recorded with her band the Echoes. Alongside standard pop it turns to show tunes, such as Who Can I Turn To (When Nobody Needs Me), and to the soul she loved. Doodlin' and That's How Heartaches Are Made were minor hits for Baby Washington, one of her favorite singers. She added La Bamba, a popular number in her concerts that sits oddly with the rest. Songwriters include Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley, Rod Argent and Randy Newman, as well as Goffin and King.
It reached number six in Britain in November 1965. British albums of the time often left singles off, so after You Don't Have to Say You Love Me became a hit, the album was retitled and resequenced for the United States under that name, with the hit added. It was first put on CD in the early 1990s, and a remastered edition with extra tracks followed in 1998.
