The concert took place at the Honolulu International Center at 12:30 a.m. local time on 14 January 1973, to reach prime time across Asia and Oceania, and Europe saw it later. Marty Pasetta produced and directed it, and it benefited the Kui Lee Cancer Fund, which received $75,000. NBC aired a ninety-minute special in the United States on 4 April 1973 to avoid a clash with Super Bowl VII, and it was the network's highest-rated program of the year. The early claim of 1.5 billion viewers in 36 countries was questioned, with critics putting the real audience at 150 to 200 million.
Presley sang 22 songs with the TCB Band, the Sweet Inspirations, the Imperials, the Stamps and the Joe Guercio orchestra, entering to Also sprach Zarathustra and closing with Can't Help Falling in Love. Bill Belew designed the white jumpsuit with a bald eagle in gems. After the show he recorded Blue Hawaii, Hawaiian Wedding Song, Early Morning Rain and others for the US broadcast.
RCA issued the two-disc album in February 1973, at first only in quadraphonic sound, and it was the first quadraphonic album to top the Billboard 200. It reached number one on both the pop and country charts in the US and number 11 in the UK. It was certified Gold on 13 February 1973 and five times Platinum in 2002. It was the penultimate live album released in his lifetime.
