Cut over several weeks with the American Sound house band, with string and horn arrangements by Glen Spreen and Mike Leech and Memphis Horns overdubs. It reached number one in the UK and Norway, number 13 on the Billboard 200 and number two on the US country albums chart, and was certified Gold in January 1970. Peter Guralnick wrote in Rolling Stone in 1969 that it was equal to anything Presley had done. Bruce Eder of AllMusic called it one of the greatest white soul albums. Dave Marsh called it a masterpiece in which Presley caught up with the pop trends of the years he spent making films. The sessions also produced Suspicious Minds, Don't Cry Daddy and Kentucky Rain. The double album From Memphis to Vegas/From Vegas to Memphis followed in November 1969, with live recordings from the International Hotel on the first disc and more American Sound tracks on the second.
