His first new material since King Creole in 1958. It went to number one in the UK and number two on the US Top LPs chart, and was certified Gold in 1999. AllMusic's Bruce Eder said Presley sounded better than on any RCA album since he signed, and Neil McCormick of the Daily Telegraph called it arguably his masterpiece. The New York Times review at the time was negative, while Billboard praised it. The first session was on the night of 20 March 1960 and produced the single Stuck on You, which went to number one. A second session two weeks later gave It's Now or Never and Are You Lonesome Tonight? as well as the rest of the album. Greil Marcus heard Chicago blues menace in several songs, driven by Presley's own acoustic guitar, Scotty Moore's playing and Boots Randolph's saxophone.
