ESG

Their 1981 debut EP: six songs, five studio tracks produced by Martin Hannett and a live closer produced by Ed Bahlman.
ESG, 1981

The ESG EP was released in 1981 by 99 Records with Factory, with a second pressing in July 1981. Its tracks are "You're No Good", "Moody", "UFO", "Earn It", "ESG" and "Hey!", the last recorded live at Hurrah and produced by Bahlman, and all are credited to ESG. Hannett produced the studio tracks, and the studio is not named on Wikipedia. Gina Franklyn did the artwork. It is funk with no brass, saxophone or synthesizers.

Robert Palmer of the New York Times called it one of the freshest records of 1981, and the Times ranked it second among that year's best EPs and cassettes; the Village Voice Pazz and Jop poll placed it third. Trouser Press called it a stark, wonderful power. The Moody EP, a 2015 Record Store Day release, took its name from the song, and Renee criticized its loose adaptation of the cover.
