Green composed it, and it was recorded on 6 October 1968 at CBS Studios in London with Mike Vernon producing. Danny Kirwan, who had joined two months earlier, helped with the harmonies and played the second guitar, and Spencer was not present. Fleetwood played the drums with timpani mallets. Green named Santo and Johnny's Sleep Walk as an inspiration and took the title from The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. He later said he would not have done Albatross without Kirwan.
The single first took off after Top of the Pops used it in a 45-second slot over the end credits. It spent one week at number one in the UK in January 1969, selling 60,000 copies a week at its peak, and when it was reissued in 1973 it reached number two. George Harrison said in 1987 that the Beatles used Albatross as a starting point while writing a new song. Danny Kirwan's Jigsaw Puzzle Blues was the B-side. Q magazine placed it 37th in its 2005 list of the 100 greatest guitar tracks.
