Nicks wrote it after reading the novel Triad by Mary Bartlet Leader and feeling she had to write something about the character. She learned only in early 1978 that Rhiannon came from a Welsh goddess. Olsen said the basic track took more than a day on analog tape: the first pass had magic but too many mistakes, the second was better but lacked it, and he assembled the album take from the two with roughly 14 or 15 cuts. Caillat remixed the single version at Wally Heider Studios on 19 January 1976.

The single reached number 11 in the US in June 1976 and number 46 in the UK on its release in February 1978. Nicks often introduced it live as a song about an old Welsh witch, and Fleetwood said her performances in those days were like an exorcism. It was played on every tour from 1975 to 1982, and a version recorded in London in 1980 is on the album Live. Rolling Stone ranked it 488th in its list of the 500 greatest songs.
