Go Your Own Way

Buckingham's breakup song, the Rumours lead single and the band's first US top-ten hit.
Fleetwood Mac, from Rumours (1977)

Written by
Lindsey Buckingham
Released
20 December 1976
Album
Rumours

Buckingham wrote it at a house the band rented in Florida between legs of a tour, and it was the first song he brought to the band for Rumours. It is about his breakup with Nicks. Recording took four months across three studios. Buckingham asked for a drum feel like the Rolling Stones' Street Fighting Man, and Fleetwood worked out his own variation. Caillat built the guitar solo from six lead takes. When Nicks heard the line about packing up and shacking up, she asked Buckingham to remove it, and he kept it.

It was released as the lead single in the US on 20 December 1976 and in the UK in February 1977. It reached number 10 on the Hot 100 in March 1977, and number 38 in the UK. Rolling Stone ranked it 120th in its 2010 list of the 500 greatest songs and first in its list of the 50 greatest Fleetwood Mac songs. Silver Springs, left off the album, was the B-side.

It was first played on the 1977 Rumours Tour and closed the main set on The Dance Tour in 1997. A recording from the Forum in Los Angeles on 29 August 1977 was released in 2023.
