The one cover on Today is a Jonathan Richman song, credited to Richman on the Aurora LP. Richardson called their version pounding and mantra-like, a cover that actually rocks, and a concert staple. Their recording for John Peel in September 1989 was voted number 41 in that year's Festive 50. It was the B-side of a 1990 single with Rain, and the 2004 DVD Don't Let Our Youth Go to Waste collects the band's four videos and live footage.
Galaxie 500 played it 44 times by the count on setlist.fm, third among their songs. On 11 October 1990 at The Point in Atlanta, Peter Buck guested on it. The live version on Copenhagen runs to nearly eight minutes.
