Play on hypersongs

The band wrote and rehearsed at Headley Grange in Hampshire and recorded in a Welsh manor house with a mobile studio. Gabriel wrote the story and nearly all the lyrics, which created tension; he briefly left to work with the director William Friedkin before returning. Brian Eno added vocal treatments to three songs. Hackett said the story was Gabriel's but the music belonged to all of them. It sold less than Selling England and was mixed on release; Melody Maker called it a white elephant. It is now widely seen as a classic; Uncut called it pure theatre and still Gabriel's best work. A fiftieth-anniversary edition in 2025 added the complete 1975 Shrine Auditorium concert.
