Play on hypersongs

It was the only song on the album written during rehearsals, built on Rutherford's riff, with Banks adding chords and melody and Collins shaping the rest; Banks called it their only truly group-written number. Rutherford said it took ten minutes and that the lyric, a very simple one about his wife, was the easiest he ever wrote. He thought it a nice little pop song, not too sugary. The producer was dismissive, Atlantic heard a hit, and it was remixed.

Released in February 1978, it reached seven in Britain, their first top ten, and twenty-three in America. Banks said it carried them through the height of punk. The mimed video, filmed at Shepperton, is the upload here. It stayed in their set until the end in 2022, and has been covered by Barbara Dickson, Red House Painters, Marti Pellow and Zucchero.
