Ripples is built on Mike Rutherford's twelve-string guitar with a piano-led middle section by Tony Banks, and was written with Collins in mind as the singer; Steve Hackett's solo is played through a guitar synthesizer. Banks picked it out as one of the album's strong choruses, and Ultimate Classic Rock heard it as the point where Phil Collins started to become Phil Collins. Bruce Gowers filmed a promotional clip for it in 1976, one of the band's first; that film is the upload in the hypersongs web. It became a live favorite from 1978 and returned for the 2007 reunion tour.
