Profondo Rosso
The score for Argento's Deep Red: three Goblin pieces and four by Giorgio Gaslini, on an LP that sold a million copies in Italy according to Simonetti.
Goblin, 1975
Profondo Rosso was recorded at Orthophonic in Rome with Giorgio Agazzi as engineer; the recording dates and producer are not stated. The film was released in Italy on March 7, 1975. Martino plays drums and percussion, Morante electric and acoustic guitars, bouzouki and vocals, Pignatelli fretless and fretted bass, tabla, acoustic guitar and vocals, and Simonetti Mellotron, Elka organ, Logan violin, celesta, Fender Rhodes, grand piano, harpsichord and Moog synthesizers, with Gaslini conducting the orchestra. The original LP, 29:25, uses heavily edited versions because of time limits, as Simonetti's liner notes say; a 30th anniversary CD in 2005 has 28 tracks, 72:17, with the complete film music.
Simonetti says it sold a million LPs in its first ten months; English Wikipedia says over a million copies, 52 weeks on the Italian charts and number one in singles and LP categories, and Italian Wikipedia says 16 weeks at number one. AllMusic gave it four stars, calling it an ambitious affair that blends jazz, prog rock and heavy metal, and "Deep Shadows" a frenetic slice of King Crimson-style jazz-rock; Den of Geek's Glen Chapman called it a genre-defying piece of work. Waxwork Records released the complete score as a triple LP, and Rustblade released a re-recorded version on October 31, 2015, by Simonetti's new band.
