Profondo Rosso
The main theme of Deep Red, a piece in 7/4 that Argento commissioned after dropping the film's first composer.
Goblin, from Profondo Rosso (1975)
Goblin composed "Profondo Rosso", "Death Dies" and "Mad Puppet". Simonetti calls the theme a real prog piece in 7/4 time, completely irregular. Italian Wikipedia, on a page flagged as unsourced, credits Pignatelli with the folk-guitar arpeggio, Morante with reworking it from 4/4 to 7/4, Martino with the Minimoog melody and Simonetti with the 3/4 chorus and organ sequence. Argento had hired the jazz pianist Giorgio Gaslini first and was unhappy, and wanted a rock sound; his producer contacted bands, and Pink Floyd, Emerson, Lake and Palmer and Deep Purple are variously named, before Cinevox's Carlo Bixio brought Goblin, who had never worked in film. Gaslini had written the orchestral parts and the children's lullaby but not the theme, fell out with Argento and left, and Argento told the band to finish. Simonetti says it was written and recorded in about two weeks, while English Wikipedia says Argento gave one night to write and one day to record.
The original theatrical release credited Gaslini for the whole score and Goblin only as performers, later corrected on home video, and three Gaslini themes remain in the film. The LP version of the title track is a montage of excerpts from the film. The single paired "Profondo Rosso" with "Death Dies" (MDF 070). Simonetti says it was shaped by Gentle Giant, King Crimson, Emerson, Lake and Palmer and Deep Purple, and thinks the Goblin sound is stronger on Suspiria and that Profondo Rosso sounds like a different band. Setlist.fm shows "Profondo rosso" played 301 times by Claudio Simonetti's Goblin, including on the 2018 and 2019 North American tours. Simonetti has re-recorded it repeatedly, on The Murder Collection (2014), the Rustblade release (2015) and a 45th anniversary release. Which version our upload is has not been established.
