The album grew from a single long piece known to fans as "Behemoth" or "Big 'Un", which the band performed on tour. It was the first album made up entirely of new music since the reunion. Greg Norman recorded and mixed it in 2013 and 2014 at Fidelitorium Recordings in North Carolina, at Hotel2Tango and at David Bryant's Montreal studio, The Pines. Harris Newman mastered it at Greymarket. At just over 40 minutes it was the band's shortest album since the vinyl version of the debut, and the first to leave out sampled or field-recorded voices. The inner sleeve says they writ, wrung and ruined it in Montreal and Kernersville, North Carolina, during all four seasons of 2013 and 2014.
Two dense, riff-driven tracks, "Peasantry or 'Light! Inside of Light!'" and "Piss Crowns Are Trebled", bookend two ambient drone pieces, "Lambs' Breath" and "Asunder, Sweet". On vinyl side A ends in a locked groove, and on the CD the two middle tracks run together. The band announced it through Pitchfork on 24 February 2015 with an eight-minute excerpt of "Peasantry" on SoundCloud. The inner artwork prints the closing words of their 2013 Polaris statement, "we love you so much / our country is fucked", and the band redirected the prize money to musical instruments in prisons.
Metacritic gives it 84. Mark Richardson of Pitchfork called the opening track the album's highlight, said it ranked with the band's best work, and noted that although there are four tracks the album really happens in three movements. The Quietus's Tristan Bath called it "pure distilled, 200 proof revolutionary instrumental rock", and Spin's Jonathan Dick called it the band's "heaviest and darkest release to date".
