placeholder was recorded at April Base in Wisconsin; Wikipedia names Brad Cook as producer, and Bandcamp credits him on bass, synthesizer and Mellotron, with Zach Hanson on drums and percussion and Duffy on guitar, vocals and piano. Chris Messina and Zach Hanson engineered, Tucker Martine mixed, Heba Kadry mastered and Robbie Simon made the artwork. Guests include Hannah Read, Liz Powell and Kacey Johansing on vocals, John Andrews, Andrew Sarlo, Luke Csehak on euphonium, Griffin Goldsmith on drums and Logan Hone on saxophone. The Nashville Scene counts eleven songs and Bandcamp twelve, including the 1:04 "Heat".

PopMatters's Rod Waterman gave it 9 out of 10 on March 12, 2019, and Spin's Andy Cush described the everyday tragedy of a great country ballad. NPR's First Listen called it Duffy's most fully realized statement. Treble called it a career-defining, if relatively conservative, folk rock record, and the Nashville Scene a full-band rock record with a pastoral West Coast country sound.
