jessica
The fourth track of placeholder, a four-minute song that PopMatters called harrowing all by itself.
Hand Habits, from placeholder (2019)
"jessica" is track four of placeholder, 4:03, with Brad Cook on bass and Mellotron, Zach Hanson on drums and percussion and Duffy on guitar, vocals, piano and percussion, recorded at April Base. No writing credit appears in the sources reached, though it is presumably Duffy's. The Nashville Scene groups it among the mellower tracks keeping the languid pace of the previous album while expanding the instrumentation, and Spin says it opens with a lyric about the narrator worrying someone no longer knows them, more direct than the album's elliptical moments. PopMatters called it harrowing all by itself and cited it with "pacify" as an example of Duffy's guitar work.
Duffy has made no statement about its meaning that was found; a WLUW review of the January 2020 show at Schubas Tavern in Chicago reads it as about someone who seemed to have hurt the writer and says Duffy said wherever you are after playing it. They played it as the sixth song of the main set at the Bowery Ballroom on April 10, 2019, after "Yr Heart" and before "Can't Calm Down". Spinitron shows radio spins in March 2019. No setlist.fm count, video, covers or samples were found, and our upload is assumed to be the studio version.
