Sin After Sin

The band's third album and major-label debut, produced by Deep Purple's Roger Glover, with Simon Phillips on drums.
Judas Priest, 1977

Sin After Sin was recorded from January 1977 at Ramport Studios in Battersea, with rehearsals at Pinewood Studios and mixing at Wessex Sound Studios, and engineering by Mark Dodson. CBS insisted on an experienced producer; the band dismissed Glover after one session, then recalled him with six days left. They also dismissed the drummer Alan Moore, judging his technique too limited, and Simon Phillips finished the sessions, making this his only album with the band. The cover is based on the Colonel Alexander Gordon mausoleum at Putney Vale Cemetery, with art by Rosław Szaybo.

It reached number 23 in the UK, their best at that point, and did not chart in the US; it began a run of eleven consecutive RIAA gold-or-better albums, and reached 152,000 US sales by 1981. AllMusic's Steve Huey gave it four stars and Record Collector four, while the Rolling Stone Album Guide gave 2.5. It has been credited with combining double-kick drumming with fast sixteenth-note rhythms later central to thrash, and Scott Ian said Dodson's work on it led Anthrax to hire him for State of Euphoria (1988). The first US tour, supporting REO Speedwagon and Foreigner, followed with Les Binks on drums, and the band headlined Croydon on May 1, 1977.
