In My Own Time was produced and arranged by the bassist Harvey Brooks, recorded in 1970 and 1971 at Bearsville Studios and, by Wikipedia's account, Mercy Sound Studios in New York. Bearsville belonged to Albert Grossman; Fred Neil wrote the liner notes and Elliott Landy took the cover photographs. Brooks said Karen sang Karen, and that he arranged the rhythm tracks to her taste. She brought her teenage children, a dog and a horse from Oklahoma to feel at ease. The musicians included Richard Bell and John Simon on piano, Amos Garrett and Daniel Hanken on guitar, Bill Keith on pedal steel, Bobby Notkoff on violin and Denny Seiwell on drums.

It did not sell. Rolling Stone said on July 22, 1971 that there is magic on this record, praising "In a Station", "When a Man Loves a Woman", "Something on Your Mind" and "Katie Cruel" and finding "How Sweet It Is" overproduced. AllMusic's Thom Jurek gave it four and a half stars, and PopMatters' Terry Sawyer eight out of ten in 2007. Light in the Attic reissued it on November 7, 2006.
