Rob Christiansen recorded and mixed the album at The American University in Washington, DC. Kranky issued it as krank 006 and Flying Nun released it in the UK. Ned Raggett of AllMusic noted that lyrics and vocal parts were removed from almost all tracks. Mark Nelson said the title Banco came from reading too much Ian Fleming, and that Donne played drums and bass on the record. In 1994 the band previewed El Lago, Balanced On Its Own Flame, Star City Russia, Comfort and Banco on stage, and played Star City Russia, Balanced on Its Own Flame and Comfort in their first Peel session. A cassette of the Lounge Ax show in Chicago on 12 February 1994 survives in the Aadam Jacobs archive.
