Steve Albini recorded and mixed the album at Electrical Audio in Chicago in July 2000, and Kranky released it on 26 February 2001. Mark Richardson of Pitchfork gave it 8.0. He confessed that his first listen left him bored, then described how the opening track unfolds one drip at a time over eighteen minutes, from electrical pops to a synthesizer drone to a reverbed guitar alternating between two chords. He heard an Eno-esque drone on David that recalled the slow bridge of I'll Melt with You. Nelson said David was named after David Bowie because its synth sound recalled side two of Low. The band previewed Twenty, Up to Pizmo and David at Meltdown 2000 on 24 June 2000. The Guardian said it sounds like Duane Eddy playing the theme to Twin Peaks.
