hypersongs

Lewis Taylor

His debut: ten songs of neo soul, recorded in a flat in Wood Green.
Lewis Taylor, 1996

Lewis Taylor was produced by Taylor for Island. Studio and personnel are not stated on its Wikipedia page, and Albumism notes that Taylor fuzzes and distorts his guitar on the opener. Japanese pressings add "I Dream the Better Dream" and "Waves". "Lucky", "Bittersweet" and "Whoever" (spelled "Whatever" by Sounds of Surprise) were three near-hit singles. Taylor told MOJO in 1997 that he felt hamstrung by straighter soul songs. The Damn Rest collects B-sides from the 1996 and 1997 singles, opening with "Asleep When You Come", the second track on the original "Lucky" 12-inch.
