"Car Wheels on a Gravel Road" is the second track on the 1998 Mercury album, 4:44, and Williams wrote it. NPR's 2020 guide to her best songs calls it an impressionistic account of her childhood. A search extract attributes to her a remark about being the child in the back seat and her father later apologizing, but the page itself was not read, so no quotation is given here.
The album it names took about three years and four producers, Roy Bittan, Steve Earle, Ray Kennedy and Williams herself, and Americana UK's retrospective quotes Earle as calling it the least fun he had working on a record. Single status, a video and live play counts were not found, and it is unknown whether the recording we hold is the studio track or a live one.
