"Something About What Happens When We Talk" is the second track on Sweet Old World, 3:50, written by Williams and produced by Williams, Dusty Wakeman and Gurf Morlix. It was released on Chameleon in 1993 as the album's fourth single, after "Six Blocks Away". The CD single also carried "Asked for Water (He Gave Me Gasoline)", "I Just Wanted to See You So Bad", "Passionate Kisses" and "Lines Around Your Eyes".

Rolling Stone's review of the album, according to Wikipedia, said Morlix's slide guitar decorates the tune sparingly and read it as a paean to a platonic relationship until its ending. NPR calls it a vulnerable ballad about the charge of meaningful conversation, and Holler ranked it seventh among her songs. Benmont Tench played Hammond B-3 on the album, but no per-track credit was found for this song. It appears in the 1996 film Unhook the Stars, the 2005 HBO miniseries Empire Falls and the 2014 film Wild. No account by Williams of what it is about, and no recording date or covers, were found.
