Epic released it on 2 December 1996. It reached number 7 in the UK on 14 December and charted for nine weeks, the fourth consecutive top 10 single from the album. The sentiment is that Australia is about the furthest place from Wales, a metaphor for Wire's wish to escape. The music carries a heavy guitar sound and a crescendo bolstered by Moore's drumming.
The first CD single carried covers of Primal Scream's "Velocity Girl", Camper Van Beethoven's "Take the Skinheads Bowling" and Frankie Valli's "Can't Take My Eyes Off You", which later appeared on Lipstick Traces. The cassette had a live version of "A Design for Life". The NME placed the song at number 150 in its 2011 list of the 150 best tracks of the past 15 years. It was used as the theme tune of the Nickelodeon UK sitcom Renford Rejects, and in advertisements for the Australian Tourist Commission.
