Everything Must Go

Released on 22 July 1996 as the second single from the album, the title track reached number 5 in the UK on 3 August. Wire cited it as a message to the fans, saying that the music had changed but that the band was still the same. The lyric asks the listener to forgive them: "and I just hope that you can forgive us, but everything must go".

Bradfield said Moore had a lot of freedom with the drums, which are not compressed as they were on several earlier singles but open and free. A prominent string section led Q's Tom Doyle to compare it to Phil Spector's Wall of Sound. The CD single carried "Black Garden", "Hanging On" and "No One Knows What It's Like to Be Me". The Chemical Brothers' remix was used in the intro movie of the PlayStation game Gran Turismo. The song also appears on Forever Delayed.
