Elliott and Timbaland wrote and produced the lead single, released on 13 March 2001. It rests on a six-note Punjabi melody played on a tumbi, with a tabla rhythm and bassline. They recorded it late in the album's production. Elliott felt the project was missing a key element, and Timbaland thought she was overanalyzing. In that period he experimented with a keyboard, and the series of sounds he made became the basis of the track.

It reached number seven on the Hot 100 and number four in Britain. A remix with Nelly Furtado became a dance club hit, and the song returned to the Hot 100 at number 40 in February 2015 after the Super Bowl XLIX halftime show. Dave Meyers directed the video, their first work together, with cameos from Ludacris, LL Cool J, Timbaland, Ja Rule, Busta Rhymes, Master P, Eve, Nate Dogg and Nicole Wray. The Guardian wrote that it just shades it as her greatest single, praising the way the sample keeps dropping out to leave blank space, with voices in Hindi and Japanese weaving through the mix. Rolling Stone named it the greatest song of the 21st century in 2025.
