The band first called it The Blue Cheer Song, and approached it as a direct homage to Blue Cheer's debut album Vincebus Eruptum. Arm said the bass and drum break and the dual out-of-tune guitar solo were particularly inspired by that record. It opens with a sample of the eulogy spoken by Peter Fonda's character in the 1966 film The Wild Angels, saying they wanna be free to do what they wanna do. A similar sample was used later on Primal Scream's Loaded. A demo version of 4:53 appears on the 2008 deluxe edition.
Trouser Press wrote that songs like this one gave Arm ample room to wheedle in classic garage-punk fashion.
