Desertshore came out on Reprise on December 20, 1970, produced by John Cale and Joe Boyd and recorded at Sound Techniques in London, apart from Le petit chevalier, cut at Studios Davout in Paris. Nico wrote every song, sang and played the harmonium. Cale played everything else except the trumpet, and he and Adam Miller sang harmonies; her son Ari sings on Le petit chevalier.
AllMusic and The New Rolling Stone Album Guide gave it four and a half stars. FLOOD, in 2024, said it welcomes back conventional elements by her standards, such as tuned instruments and harmony vocals. Throbbing Gristle recorded a public studio session of the album in 2007, completed by Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti as Desertshore/The Final Report in 2012, an act Genesis P-Orridge publicly objected to.
