Afraid is the sixth song on Desertshore, 3:27, written by Nico with Cale arranging. uDiscover calls it a piano-led drawing-room ballad with enough delicate poignancy to bring a tear to the eye, and FLOOD describes lilting piano balladry. Mark Deming of AllMusic lists it among the songs that are quite beautiful in their own ascetic way. Setlist.fm counts seven performances. At the 2008 tribute Life Along the Borderline it was performed with a string arrangement. No source explaining the lyric was found.
