Noel Gallagher wrote most of the songs on a holiday in Mustique, and he and Owen Morris recorded demos there. Recording started at Abbey Road on 7 October 1996, and the band moved to Ridge Farm in Surrey in November. Noel wanted the album to sound as colossal as possible and stacked many guitar tracks, in some cases ten channels with the same part. The songs run long, and the opener D'You Know What I Mean? lasts 7:42.

Released on 21 August 1997, it sold over 424,000 copies on its first day and became the fastest-selling album in British chart history. It also debuted at number two on the Billboard 200. It was the biggest-selling album of 1997 in the UK. Early reaction was positive and later reviews more negative, many calling it bloated. Noel has criticised it, while Liam Gallagher has called it his favorite Oasis album. D'You Know What I Mean? and All Around the World both reached number one in the UK singles chart.
