The band booked Monnow Valley Studio near Rockfield in January 1994 and worked there with the producer Dave Batchelor, whom Noel Gallagher knew from his time roadieing for the Inspiral Carpets. The sessions were costing 800 pounds a day and the results sounded thin, so Batchelor was dismissed and Slide Away was the only track kept. In February the group re-recorded at Sawmills Studios in Cornwall, where Noel produced alongside Mark Coyle. They played together without soundproofing between the instruments and Noel overdubbed guitars afterwards. Supersonic had already been recorded at the Pink Museum in Liverpool in December 1993.

The manager Marcus Russell then contacted Owen Morris, who mixed the album at Loco Studios in Wales and the Matrix in London, stripped back Noel's guitar layers, added eighth-note tape delay to the drums and compressed the final mix heavily. It was mastered at Johnny Marr's studio in Manchester. The sleeve photograph was taken by Michael Spencer Jones in Paul Arthurs' house in Didsbury.

The album was released on 29 August 1994 and went in at number one in the UK on 4 September, outselling the runner-up by a factor of 50 percent. It was certified 10 times platinum by the BPI and platinum in the US. NME's Keith Cameron called Noel a pop craftsman in the classic tradition, and Rolling Stone placed the album at 217 on its 2020 list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. A 30th anniversary edition on 30 August 2024 topped the UK albums chart a week later.
