Early sessions in 2004 with Death in Vegas as producers did not satisfy the band, and Noel Gallagher said the songs were not good enough to form a record. After a break in which Let There Be Love, Lyla and Part of the Queue were written, the band returned to Wheeler End Studios with Noel producing and the Who's drummer Zak Starkey joining. Dave Sardy then took over the lead production role. Lyla was recorded late, with Sardy remixing Noel's demo, Liam Gallagher adding vocals and Starkey a new drum track.
Writing was shared among the band, with songs by Andy Bell, Gem Archer and Liam as well as Noel. The album reached number one in the UK with first-week sales of 237,865 and number 12 in the US. Reviews were generally positive and critics called it the best Oasis album since Morning Glory. It won Best Album and a People's Choice Award at the Q Awards, and spawned two UK number ones, Lyla and The Importance of Being Idle.
