Texas Fever came out on Polydor in March 1984 as a six-song mini-album, catalogued OJMLP 1 and subtitled Six Songs By Orange Juice. Dennis Bovell produced the first five songs and Martin Hayles produced A Sad Lament. Will Gosling engineered it. Collins wrote most of it, with Craziest Feeling co-written with Frank Want and Punch Drunk written by Malcolm Ross. It reached No. 34 in the UK, and the single Bridge reached No. 67. The CD reissues of 1998 and 2014 added Leaner Period, Out for the Count and Move Yourself.

Tom Ewing of Pitchfork remarked that on the Coals to Newcastle box set the six-song record is saddled with barely different alternate mixes.
