Subtitled Bombs Over Baghdad, it was released as the lead single on 29 August 2000. Earthtone III produced it at 155 beats per minute, with drum and bass rhythms, guitars, organs and gospel vocals. The Morris Brown College Gospel Choir sing the backing vocals, David Whild plays the guitar solo and Cutmaster Swiff adds cuts. Big Boi said they wanted to differ from the music around them, where everybody used the same formula of a beat, an MC and somebody to sing the hook. The Guardian's Alexis Petridis wrote that it was not an anti-war track, that André said it worked like a slap in the face, that the sound was influenced by drum 'n' bass heard on a visit to the UK, and that it carries a Hendrix-inspired guitar solo. Rolling Stone's Nathan Brackett heard in it a blast of up-tempo, turn-of-the-century dislocation with electro breaks and a gospel choir.

Many urban Top 40 stations banned it because of its title, and it peaked at 69 on the R&B/Hip-Hop songs chart and 61 on the UK Singles Chart. Dave Meyers directed the video. Pitchfork's Stuart Berman wrote in the magazine's list of the best tracks of the 2000s that it was not just the song of the decade but the decade itself. Both the Guardian and The Ringer rank it first among Outkast songs. The song was played widely during the 2003 Iraq War, when US troops used it as a battle cry, and both members have said they opposed the invasion. Zack de la Rocha made a remix in fall 2000 for rock radio, and it appeared on the 2020 reissue. At the November 2025 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, Tyler, the Creator covered the song in a tribute to the duo.
