Released on 24 October 2000 as the second single from Stankonia, it was recorded and mixed at Stankonia Recording in Atlanta and rests on a sample of The Brothers Johnson's Strawberry Letter #23. André Benjamin told Vibe that it began as an acoustic guitar song he was doing at home, which he then converted into something people could understand a bit more.

It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on 17 February 2001 and stayed on that chart for 22 weeks. It also topped the charts in Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden. The lead single, B.O.B, had failed to reach the Hot 100, and Ms. Jackson helped sell the album. It won the Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. F. Gary Gray directed the video, which won the BET Award for Video of the Year and the MTV Video Music Award for Best Hip-Hop Video. Rolling Stone placed the song 145th on its 2021 list of the 500 greatest songs, and the Guardian ranked it sixth among Outkast's 20 greatest.
