The original recording opened the September 1989 EP Barging Into the Presence of God and runs 5:51. It was first recorded at Woodhouse Studios in Leeds in late 1988. The band re-recorded it for The Comforts of Madness, where it is track ten at 5:37, produced by John Fryer. The EP version was later compiled on Mrs. Dolphin, and the 2020 reissue of the album added a demo made at Woodhouse Studio, which God Is In The TV called a more tentative but charming take.
Toppermost called it a mid tempo throbbing monster, with guitars that arpeggiate around two chords and Masters singing like a heartsore angel. Space Echo suggested the album version may be the band's signature song. Reviewing the reissue, Pitchfork's Robert Ham said Fryer pushed it toward its dream-pop pinnacle by dialing back the delay pedal and cranking its coiled bassline. It also appeared on compilations, among them Indie Top 20 Vol. VIII and Cherry Red's Still In A Dream: A Story of Shoegaze 1988-1995.
Live and covers
It was still in the set in 1994. A recording of the show at The Met Cafe in Rhode Island on 6 November 1994 has it sixth in an eleven-song set, running about six minutes. Ride recorded it for their first BBC Radio 1 session in 1990, officially released on the collection Waves in 2003. Dum Dum Girls performed it in a 2014 video session for Fender.
In 2020 4AD released an official video made by Masters with the director Terako Terao. Masters filmed himself singing the original version, and it was the song's first video. The upload in the hypersongs web is that 2020 official video, which uses the original EP-era recording rather than the re-recorded album version.
