Silver Bell was recorded in 2000 at Kingsway Studio in New Orleans, the studio founded by Daniel Lanois, with Jay Joyce and Craig Ross producing. Doug Lancio played guitar, John Deaderick keys, Frank Swart bass and Billy Beard percussion, and Emmylou Harris sang harmony on "Truth #2". The 2013 release was not simply the bootleg: the running order was changed and Glyn Johns remixed it.
Tape Op's review notes that Ethan Allen engineered it, that Johns remixed it without Griffin present at Mark Knopfler's British Grove Studios on an API console, mixing to quarter-inch tape at 15 ips, and that Andrew Mendelson mastered it at Georgetown Masters in Nashville. Johns is quoted as saying it was on analog tape, which is what he would have preferred anyway. It debuted at 64 on the Billboard 200 and 5 on the Americana and folk chart, and scored 83 on Metacritic; PopMatters gave it 10 out of 10.
