Flaming Red was recorded in Nashville with Jay Joyce as producer, apart from "One Big Love", which Angelo Petraglia produced. Kenny Aronoff, Brad Pemberton and Frank Sass played drums, Joyce played guitar, keyboards and programming, and Emmylou Harris and Buddy and Julie Miller sang backing vocals. It reached number 12 on the Top Heatseekers chart and had sold 122,000 copies in the United States by May 2004. Its adult alternative singles were "One Big Love" at number five and "Blue Sky" at number seven.
AllMusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine gave it four stars and called her one of the more talented and ambitious singer-songwriters of the late nineties; Entertainment Weekly gave it an A-, and NPR later put it on its list of the 150 greatest albums by women. Katy Perry named it her favorite record as a teenager.
