The Part 2 single was released on 23 November 1979 with One of My Turns on the B-side. It was the Christmas number one in Britain that year and reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, selling over four million copies. Ezrin suggested the disco elements, and Gilmour's solo was played on a 1955 Les Paul Gold Top.

The choir was 23 students from Islington Green School, led by music head Alun Renshaw. They were allotted 40 minutes, the school was paid 1,000 pounds, and the headteacher, Margaret Maden, was told afterward. In 2004 choir members filed a royalty claim, after a 1996 change in British law. The song was banned in South Africa in 1980 after school-boycott supporters adopted it. Waters said the children were exactly the collaborators he expected.

Live and covers

Waters performed it with Cyndi Lauper in Berlin on 21 July 1990, released that September. Rolling Stone ranked it 384th in 2010, and Waters won a 1983 BAFTA for Best Original Song for it.
