The music was written in 1974 by Gilmour and Waters with lyrics by Waters, under the title You've Got to Be Crazy. The band played it on tour in 1974 and 1975, as part of the Wish You Were Here setlist. Waters changed the lyrics, moved the key and retitled it Dogs for Animals. Gilmour said the first words were too many to sing, so two thirds of them were cut. It is the only song on Animals on which Gilmour sings lead or receives a co-writing credit.
Following the album's Orwellian idea of comparing people to animals, Dogs concentrates on the competitive world of business and a high-powered businessman who is charming on the surface and predatory underneath, then lonely and dying in old age. The middle section is built from layers of synthesizers with dog barks processed through a vocoder. Les Claypool's Frog Brigade performed the whole of Animals in October 2000 and released it as Live Frogs Set 2.
