Waters wrote the lyrics, and the music is credited to all four members. Gilmour sings the verses and Wright the bridges. Wright played Farfisa, Wurlitzer and VCS 3, Mason played rototoms, and Doris Troy, Lesley Duncan, Liza Strike and Barry St. John sang backing vocals. The clock intro was recorded by Alan Parsons in an antique shop as a quadraphonic test. Gilmour has said that was Parsons's idea. Waters has said the lyrics came from realizing at around 28 or 29 that he was already in the middle of life.
The band played it live from 1972 to 1975 and again from 1987 to 1994. Waters has performed it solo since 1999 and rerecorded it on 24 August 2023.
