The music is by Gilmour, Wright and Waters, and the lyrics by Waters. It opens with a four-note guitar phrase from Gilmour, and a 1971 Wine Glasses sequence was overdubbed on Part I. It was recorded at Abbey Road between January and July 1975. On 5 June 1975 Barrett turned up unannounced with a shaved head and eyebrows, and Wright said nobody recognized him for about 45 minutes. Gilmour described Part IX as a slow 4/4 funeral march.
Live
The band first played it as Shine On on a June 1974 French tour and gave the full nine parts on the 1975 North American tour. Parts I to V were played in shows from 1987 to 1994.
