Only "Aguirre I" and "Aguirre II" come from the film; the rest are 1972 to 1974 recordings, including alternate versions of "Morgengruss II" and "Agnus Dei" from Einsjaeger und Siebenjaeger. Head Heritage says it was released to honor a contract clause with Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser's Pilz label, that its credits are inaccurate, list Djong Yun, who does not appear, and omit the Moog and choir-organ, and that "Vergegenwaertigung" is a side-long Moog piece from 1972. The recording is credited to Bavaria Tonstudio in Munich by popolvuh.nl. AllMusic gave it three and a half stars. SPV added "Aguirre III" as a bonus in 2004, and reissues followed on Wah Wah Supersonic (2015) and BMG (2018).
